Elective Surgeries Restart in Brisbane After Flu and COVID Pressure
Published in News on October 20, 2025

Hospitals across the Metro North Health Service (MNHS) region of Brisbane have resumed elective surgeries at noon today after a 48-hour suspension of category 2 and category 3 procedures. The pause—implemented earlier this week—was designed to relieve pressure on emergency departments facing high numbers of patients with influenza and COVID-19.
During the interruption, MNHS postponed 29 scheduled surgeries to free up staff and resources for urgent care. Importantly, category 1 surgeries—those considered urgent or time-sensitive—continued without interruption.
Queensland’s Minister for Health and Ambulance Services, Tim Nicholls, expressed his gratitude to nursing and clinical teams for their tireless work throughout the surge. He emphasised that, though the state remains in the midst of what he termed a “Queensland health crisis,” there are positive signs: ambulance ramping times (the waits for ambulance-to-hospital handover) are trending downward, and the “Surgery Connect Surge” initiative has delivered the biggest drop in the elective surgery waiting-list in a decade.
In summary, the brief halt in non-urgent surgeries allowed Brisbane’s public hospitals to temporarily shift resources toward managing a wave of flu and COVID patients. With the surge easing sufficiently, elective operations are now back on schedule—marking a positive shift in operational pressures across the region’s public health network.
Additional Note: Accommodation for Patients and Carers
For patients and carers travelling to Brisbane for treatment, suitable accommodation options are available. Many hospitals list nearby lodging to support families attending treatment.
For example:
- The Queensland Health website outlines that hospitals “provide information about local accommodation options on or near the hospital grounds.”
- At St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital in Spring Hill, a list of partner hotels and serviced apartments offers “patient and carer” discounted rates—such as one studio suite from about A$168 per night.
- Nearby the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Royal Brisbane Hospital precinct, the Annexe Apartments in Herston advertise self-contained studio, one- and two-bedroom units complete with kitchen and laundry facilities for visiting patients and families.
These accommodation arrangements help families stay close to hospital facilities during treatment visits, surgeries or post-care stays—especially for regional or interstate patients.
